Bar Mitzvah Tefillin: A Complete Checklist for Miami Families

Buying tefillin for a Bar Mitzvah is one of the most meaningful purchases a Jewish family makes. It's also one of the most confusing — between ketav styles, batim grades, and price ranges from $400 to over $5,000. This checklist walks Miami families through what actually matters.

Start with a qualified Sofer STaM

Before you compare prices, find a Certified Sofer STaM you trust. Tefillin verification — checking the parshiot (inner parchments), batim (boxes), and retzuot (straps) — is the only way to know what you're really buying. Rabbi Levi Backman is certified by Lemaan Yilmedu and serves families across Miami.

Choose the ketav (writing style)

The three main styles are Ashkenazi (Beit Yosef), Sephardi (Ari Zal), and Chabad (Alter Rebbe). Choose the one that matches your family minhag (custom). If you're not sure, ask Rabbi Levi or your local rav.

Choose the batim grade

Peshutim Mehudarim — beautifully made one-piece batim, the most common choice for Bar Mitzvah. Solid kosher quality at a reasonable price.

Gassot — thick, premium one-piece batim from a single hide. The most halachically beautiful and durable, lasting generations. Higher price but a true lifetime investment.

Avoid Peshutim 'simple' (multi-piece, non-mehudar) for a Bar Mitzvah — the quality difference is real.

Everything else your son will need

Beyond the tefillin themselves: a tallit, a custom tefillin bag and tallit bag (often personalized with name and date), a small mirror for proper placement, and a siddur in his preferred language (Hebrew, English, or Spanish).

Rabbi Levi's Bar Mitzvah Package starts at $1,200 and includes all of these — built around the tefillin you choose, with personal guidance from start to finish.

For the daily mitzvah itself, see How to Put On Tefillin and The Blessing for Tefillin.

How far in advance to start

Ideally 3–6 months before the Bar Mitzvah. Custom batim, custom bags, and verification all take time. WhatsApp Rabbi Levi at 845-729-1459 to start the conversation early.
