About
Meet Rabbi Levi Backman
Certified Sofer STaM, based in Miami — writing, inspecting, and guiding families across South Florida.

In his own words
I'm Levi Backman, a Certified Sofer STaM. My work is the writing and inspection of Torah scrolls, mezuzot, tefillin, and megillot — the small physical objects that carry so much of Jewish life. It's a craft I trained for over years, and it's the work I do full-time out of Miami.
I moved to South Florida because the community here needed someone who could sit with a family, open their mezuzot in front of them, and give a straight halachic answer — in English, Spanish, or Hebrew — without the scroll ever leaving their home. That's still the standard I hold every visit to.
Training
Certified by Lemaan Yilmedu
My certification is through Lemaan Yilmedu, the leading Sofer STaM certification program, after years of study under recognized soferim. The program covers the halachos of ksav Ashuri, the specific requirements for each of the four scrolls (Sifrei Torah, Tefillin, Mezuzot, and Megillot), and the practical inspection skills a sofer needs in the field.
In practice that means every check I do is grounded in the same standards a rav would want applied — not a quick visual pass. Every inspection ends with a written certificate documenting what was found and what, if anything, needs attention.
For a fuller breakdown of the training and standards behind every visit, see the credentials page.

What makes Miami Mezuzah Center different
One sofer, start to finish
The person who inspects your scroll is the same person who would repair it, write the replacement, or come back next year to check it again. Nothing gets outsourced or forwarded.
Honest halachic reads
Kosher means kosher, pasul means pasul. If a scroll is fine, I say so. If it needs a small fix, I quote the smallest fix that holds. No upsell built into the visit.
The visit comes to you
Home visits across Miami-Dade and South Broward, with Boca Raton by request. You don't ship anything, you don't leave anything with a stranger, and you watch the whole inspection.
Written certificates, every time
Every scroll inspected is documented — kosher status, findings, and recommendations — in a certificate that stays with your household records.
Serving South Florida
The families and communities I work with
Miami Mezuzah Center works with families, shuls, day schools, and organizations across Aventura, Miami Beach, Bal Harbour, Surfside, Sunny Isles, Hallandale, Bay Harbor Islands, North Miami Beach, Brickell, Doral, Hollywood, Weston, Fort Lauderdale, and Boca Raton. Some visits are a single mezuzah for a young couple's first apartment; others are a full-building audit at a shul. All of them get the same care.
