What a Sofer STaM does
STaM is the Hebrew acronym for Sifrei Torah, tefillin and mezuzot. A sofer writes these sacred texts on parchment and inspects them according to their halachic requirements. The work includes the shape of each letter, the accuracy of the text and the condition of the writing, not simply whether a scroll looks attractive.
Soferim also write and inspect megillot, including Megillat Esther for Purim. Each type of scroll has its own requirements. If you are choosing a new scroll, discuss your family's ktav tradition and intended use; if you already own one, explain its history and any concerns before arranging an inspection.
How mezuzah and tefillin checking works
Inspection is done letter by letter by a trained eye. The sofer examines the parchment for damaged or incomplete letters, fading and other issues that an untrained eye can miss. Tefillin checking also considers the batim and straps, rather than treating the outer appearance as proof that the contents are kosher.
You receive a written certificate documenting the inspection. If a repair is needed, it is quoted separately so you can understand the finding and decide before additional work. Mention moisture exposure, previous repairs or a damaged case when booking. Arrange pickup, a home visit or shipping in advance, especially when you need your items back for a particular date.
