Sefer Torah
Torah Scroll for Sale — Sales, Commissioning & Brokerage
Buying or dedicating a Sefer Torah is one of the most significant mitzvot a family or community will undertake. Rabbi Levi Backman, Certified Sofer STaM, guides you through every halachic and practical decision.
A Sefer Torah is not a commodity — it is a sacred object that takes a trained sofer roughly a year to write, with over 304,000 letters that must each be perfect for the scroll to be kosher. The market is full of beautiful-looking scrolls that are halachically problematic. We make sure the Torah you buy, commission, or dedicate is the real thing.
Whether you are a family dedicating a Torah in memory of a loved one, a donor gifting a Sefer Torah to a synagogue, or a shul replacing a damaged scroll, Rabbi Levi handles the sourcing, halachic vetting, negotiation, and inspection — start to finish.
New Sefer Torah
Commission a new scroll from a trusted sofer. We oversee ktav level, klaf, ink, and writing style at every stage.
Pre-owned brokerage
Source and vet pre-owned Torah scrolls. Every scroll is inspected letter-by-letter before a deal closes.
Halachic vetting
Magnified inspection of ktav, tagim, and klaf. You get an honest report — not a sales pitch.
What we look at
- Ktav level — Beit Yosef, Arizal, or Vellish, written to the level you are paying for
- Klaf quality — proper processing, even thickness, no patches in critical places
- Tagim and crowns — every letter that requires them
- Sirtut — the ruled lines under every line of text
- Tefer — sewn with giddin (sinew), not thread
- Atzei chayim — wooden rollers, properly attached and balanced
- Provenance — when it was written, by whom, and where
- Condition — cracking, fading, or repairable letters identified honestly

Frequently asked questions
How much does a Sefer Torah cost?
A new, fully kosher Sefer Torah typically ranges from $35,000 to $80,000+ depending on ktav, sofer, klaf and writing style. Vetted pre-owned scrolls can be sourced for less. Every quote is line-item and transparent.
Can I commission a new Sefer Torah?
Yes. Rabbi Levi works with trusted sofrim, oversees materials and ktav, and inspects the scroll at every stage so what is delivered matches what was promised.
Do you broker pre-owned Sefer Torahs?
Yes — for synagogues, families, and donors. Every pre-owned Torah is inspected letter-by-letter for halachic kashrut before any transaction is finalized.
Who is typically buying a Sefer Torah?
Most clients are families dedicating a Torah in memory of a loved one, donors gifting a Torah to a shul, or congregations replacing or adding to their aron kodesh.
