How to Know If Your Mezuzah Is Still Kosher

A mezuzah looks the same the day you hang it and ten years later — but inside the case, the parchment can crack, fade, or develop tiny letter breaks that make it halachically invalid (pasul). In Miami's heat and humidity, this happens faster than in cooler climates. Here's how to tell, and what to do about it.

Why mezuzot become pasul over time

A kosher mezuzah requires every single letter to be whole, in order, and clearly readable. Even a single crack in a letter, a touching letter pair, or a faded line can invalidate the entire scroll.

The two biggest enemies of a mezuzah in South Florida are heat and humidity. Direct sun on a front-door post, salt air in coastal homes, and seasonal humidity all break down the ink and parchment over time — often without any sign on the outside of the case.

Visual signs to look for

Open the case carefully and look at the parchment in good light. If you see any of the following, the scroll likely needs professional inspection: faded or chipped letters, ink that wipes off when touched, water staining or wrinkling, mold, or two letters that have run together.

Even if everything looks fine to the naked eye, halacha requires inspection under magnification by a qualified Sofer STaM. Tiny breaks invisible to the eye still invalidate the scroll.

How often you should check

The classic halachic requirement is twice every seven years. In Miami, families with outdoor mezuzot (front doors, garage doors, patios) often choose to check once a year because of the climate. Indoor mezuzot generally hold up better. Full schedule: How Often Should You Check Your Mezuzah?.

After a hurricane, flood, or any time mezuzot have been exposed to moisture, a check is strongly recommended even if the visit isn't due yet.

What a Sofer STaM does

Rabbi Levi Backman is a Certified Sofer STaM trained to inspect mezuzot under magnification, letter by letter, against halachic requirements. He'll let you know whether the scroll is kosher, repairable, or needs to be replaced — and provide a written certificate.
