Mezuzah Placement Guide for Miami Homes
Hanging a mezuzah correctly is a beautiful mitzvah — but the details matter halachically. This guide walks you through which doorways require a mezuzah, the correct height, the right side, the proper angle, and the bracha to say when affixing it.
Which doorways need a mezuzah
Every doorway in a Jewish home that leads to a usable room (bedroom, kitchen, dining room, living room, office, etc.) requires a mezuzah. The front door is the most important, but interior rooms used regularly also need one.
Bathrooms, very small closets, and rooms smaller than 4×4 amot (roughly 6.5×6.5 feet) generally do not require a mezuzah. When in doubt, ask a Sofer STaM.
Which side of the doorpost
The mezuzah is placed on the right side of the doorway as you enter the room. For the main entrance, that means the right side as you walk into your home from the outside.
For interior rooms, the orientation depends on which side is considered the 'entrance' — usually based on which room is more permanent or more frequently entered.
Correct height
The mezuzah is placed at the bottom of the top third of the doorpost — roughly shoulder height for an average adult. If the doorpost is unusually tall, it should still be high enough to be visibly in the upper third.
It should never be hung at the very top or directly at the middle.
The angle (slanted vs vertical)
Ashkenazi custom is to slant the mezuzah diagonally, with the top tilted inward toward the room. Sephardi custom is to hang it straight up and down. Both are valid — follow your family's tradition. Background: Why Is a Mezuzah Slanted?.
The bracha
Before affixing the mezuzah, recite: 'Baruch atah Hashem, Elokeinu Melech ha'olam, asher kid'shanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivanu likboa mezuzah.' If you're hanging multiple mezuzot at once, you only need to say the bracha on the first one. Full step-by-step: How to Hang a Mezuzah.
